  Andaman and Nicobar Islands
Slightly further a field lies the Andaman and Nicobar arcipelago, situated to the east of the Bay of Bengal. It is comprised of 500 or so coral islands (again, only a few are inhabited), much of the main island and surrounding isles are out of bounds since these areas of 700 square kilometers. Much of the main island and surrounding isles are out of bounds since these areas are protected territories. The islands are home to indigenous tribes, many of whom have consistently shunned any contact with the outside world. The anthropological and forest museums are worth visiting to learn about the history, life-style and culture of these tribes.

Heavily forested with a variety of fauna and flora, days spent here can be as strenuous or laid-back as you like! The administrative capital is Port Blair, and it is here that you fly from either Madras (Chennai) or Calcutta (approximately a 2 hour flight) should you wish to spend some time exploring Port Blair, the Samudrika Museum here is well worth a visit. It has 5 galleries covering the history and geography of the islands and also has an extensive collection of shells and corals.

Should you wish to further explore the Andaman and Nicobar archipelago, other nearby islands that can be visited from Port Blair include Ross Island, Havelock Island, Neil Island, Cinque Island and finally by charter boat, Barren Island, which has the only active volcano in India. (Shore-landings are not possible on Barren Island however!) With coral reefs to be explored and Islands to visit there is plenty to keep you occupied!.
